What is Form 3115?

Form 3115 (Application for Change in Accounting Method) is the 8-page IRS application that a taxpayer — an individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, trust, or tax-exempt organization — must file under IRC Section 446(e) to obtain IRS consent before changing its overall method of accounting (such as switching between the cash receipts and disbursements method and an accrual method under IRC Section 448) or changing the tax treatment of any material item (most commonly catching up missed real-estate depreciation after a cost-segregation study under Designated Automatic Accounting Method Change Number (DCN) 7, adopting the tangible property repair regulations, or changing inventory valuation under UNICAP Section 263A). Across its 8 pages, Form 3115 covers Part I (Information for Automatic Change Request with DCN), Part II (Information for All Requests), Part III (Information for Non-Automatic Change Request), Part IV (Section 481(a) Adjustment computation and spread period), and Schedules A through E (Overall Method Change, Deferral Method for Advance Payments, LIFO/Inventory Changes, and Change in Depreciation or Amortization). Upload the 8-page Form 3115 PDF in JustFill to complete every part and schedule in your browser.

Field-by-field breakdown

What each section of Form 3115 asks for. JustFill’s AI will detect these fields automatically when you upload the PDF — review the breakdown below so you know what to enter.

Heading, Entity Type & Part I — Automatic Change Request (Page 1)

Identification of the filer and the applicant (if different, such as a consolidated group parent), Tax Identification Number, principal business activity code, tax year of change, type of entity checkbox, and Part I Item 1(a) Designated Automatic Accounting Method Change Number (DCN, such as "7" for impermissible to permissible depreciation or "233" for small business cash method).

Part II — Information for All Requests (Pages 1–3, Lines 4–19)

Audit protection and IRS examination status questions (Lines 4–8), prior-5-year accounting method changes (Line 9), detailed description of each item being changed showing its Present Method and Proposed Method (Line 14), legal basis for the proposed change (Line 16), and conference-of-right election for non-automatic requests.

Part III (Non-Automatic Requests) & Part IV — Section 481(a) Adjustment (Pages 3–4, Lines 20–29)

Part III covers user-fee and ruling information for non-automatic requests. Part IV reports whether the change is made on a cut-off basis or with an IRC Section 481(a) catch-up adjustment, the net dollar amount of the Section 481(a) adjustment (indicating "+" for net positive income increase or "−" for net negative deduction), and whether a negative adjustment is taken entirely in the year of change or a positive adjustment over 4 tax years.

Schedule A — Change in Overall Method of Accounting (Pages 4–5)

Completed when changing between overall cash and accrual methods; reconciles income and expenses accrued but not received/paid at the close of the year preceding the year of change.

Schedules B, C & D — Advance Payments, Inventory & LIFO Changes (Pages 5–7)

Schedule B covers deferral of advance payments under IRC Section 451(c); Schedule C covers changes in the LIFO inventory method; Schedule D covers general inventory valuation and UNICAP Section 263A absorption changes.

Schedule E — Change in Depreciation or Amortization (Page 8)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • 1Attaching Form 3115 to the federal income tax return but forgetting to mail (or fax) the signed duplicate copy of the automatic Form 3115 to the IRS Ogden, UT office no later than the date the original tax return is filed.
  • 2Filing an amended tax return (Form 1040-X, 1065-X, or 1120-X) to fix two or more years of missed or incorrect depreciation instead of filing Form 3115 with an IRC Section 481(a) catch-up adjustment.
  • 3Leaving Part I, Line 1(a) blank on an automatic change request instead of entering the specific Designated Automatic Accounting Method Change Number (DCN) from the current IRS List of Automatic Changes Revenue Procedure.
  • 4Failing to attach the required itemized Section 481(a) calculation statement and present-vs.-proposed method attachment referenced in Part II Line 14 and Part IV Line 26.

Frequently asked questions

An Automatic Change Request applies to accounting method changes listed in the IRS's current List of Automatic Changes Revenue Procedure (entered by its DCN code in Part I, Line 1(a)): there is $0 IRS user fee, and you can file it up to the extended due date of the tax return for the year of change. A Non-Automatic Change Request requires advance IRS National Office ruling consent, a user fee, and must be filed before the last day of the tax year of change.
The Section 481(a) adjustment prevents income or deductions from being duplicated or omitted when you change accounting methods. It measures the cumulative difference between the old method and the new method as of the beginning of the year of change. A net negative Section 481(a) adjustment (which reduces taxable income, such as catching up missed depreciation) is deducted 100% in the year of change, whereas a net positive Section 481(a) adjustment (which increases taxable income) is generally spread ratably over 4 tax years (25% per year).
Once a taxpayer has filed two or more tax returns using an impermissible depreciation method (or failing to claim allowable depreciation, or before reclassifying assets via a cost-segregation study), the IRS treats correcting that depreciation as a change in accounting method. Instead of amending multiple prior-year returns, the taxpayer files Form 3115 under DCN 7 and claims the entire cumulative missed depreciation in the current tax year via a negative Section 481(a) adjustment.
In addition to attaching the original Form 3115 to your timely filed federal income tax return, you must send a signed duplicate copy of the automatic Form 3115 no later than the date you file the return to the Internal Revenue Service, Ogden Submission Processing Center, Mail Stop 4917, 1973 Rulon White Blvd., Ogden, UT 84201 (or fax it to 844-249-8134).
