How to make a Canva PDF fillable

Canva designs the page; it does not add form fields. Download the design as a PDF, add the fields here, and export a workbook or form people can type into.

Upload your form

Choose a PDF, a Word file or an image from your files, or photograph a paper form.

PDF, Word (.docx), JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF and BMP. Free account required, no credit card.

Your first download is free, with no watermark. After that: a watermark, or a $7 one-time pack (25 clean PDF downloads + 25 AI credits). AI detection covers up to 15 pages per run.

By uploading, you confirm you have the legal right to use this document.

Build and preview fields free. Exporting clickable fields needs a one-time pack ($7) or a monthly plan.

Can Canva make a fillable PDF?

No. Canva’s help center has no option for adding form fields to a downloaded PDF, and it advises against PDF for designs with interactivity. Canva’s own polls and quizzes live in the web design and send answers to Canva Sheets, not to a PDF. The fields have to be added after you download the design.

From a Canva design to a fillable PDF

  1. 01

Download the design as a PDF

In Canva, open Download and choose a PDF file type. For a form people fill on screen, leave crop marks and bleed off, and leave Flatten PDF unticked unless the next step fails.

  2. 02

    Upload the PDF

Drop the file into JustFill. Field detection proposes a box on each answer line, checkbox and table cell it finds on every page.

  3. 03

    Check every page

Decorative shapes, frames and dotted dividers are common in Canva designs and can be mistaken for answer areas, or missed. Delete the wrong boxes and drag a rectangle wherever an answer should go.

  4. 04

    Set types, sizes and names

Make tick boxes Checkbox, make one-of-several choices Radio, give big reflection boxes a generous height, and set the font size of each text field. Name the fields so the answers stay readable when exported.

  5. 05

    Export the fillable PDF

Download the PDF with real form fields. Your client or buyer types into it in Acrobat Reader, a browser or a phone app; they do not need Canva or JustFill.

Which Canva download to use

Both PDF options work as a base. The print option adds the choice of crop marks and bleed (0.125 inch by default); turn those off for a form that is filled on screen, or the page will carry trim marks around the edge.

Flatten PDF, in Canva’s words, converts the file into a static image. Fields still work on top of a flattened page, because a form field is just a rectangle at a position, but the page text is no longer selectable and the file gets bigger. Use it as the fallback: Adobe’s own forum has a long thread where Acrobat’s Prepare Form refused Canva files with a “Bad PDF” error, and the accepted fix was to download the design again with Flatten PDF ticked.

Workbooks, planners and worksheets

Most people asking how to make a Canva PDF fillable are building a webinar workbook, a coaching worksheet, a planner or a client questionnaire. The page design is the product, so it should not change when fields are added. Fields are placed on top of the page you exported; the layout, colours and fonts of the design stay as Canva wrote them.

Answers typed into the fields use a plain sans-serif font, not your Canva brand font. For long reflection answers, draw a tall box so there is room to write several lines.

If you change the design in Canva later and download it again, that is a new file. Upload it and check the fields again; a saved layout is offered automatically only for the identical file.

Links are not fields

Canva keeps clickable hyperlinks in PDF downloads, except flattened ones. That makes a design feel interactive, but a link only opens a web page; nobody can type into it. Answer boxes, tick boxes and choices have to be added as form fields after the download, which is what the steps above do.

What it costs

Uploading the file, detecting fields, drawing and naming them and previewing the result is free. Downloading the PDF with clickable fields needs a one-time pack ($7, 25 clean downloads) or a monthly plan. The first clean copy of a form you filled yourself is free, but it is flattened, so it has no fields left. Anyone you send the fillable PDF to can type into it in Acrobat Reader, a browser or a phone app without a JustFill account.

No. Canva’s help center has no option for adding form fields to a downloaded PDF, and it advises against PDF for interactive designs. Canva’s own forms, such as polls and quizzes, live in the web design and send answers to Canva Sheets. Download the design as a PDF and add the fields in a PDF tool.
No. Acrobat Pro’s Prepare Form is one way, but it needs a paid plan and sometimes rejects Canva files. A browser tool adds the same kind of form fields and the file works in the free Acrobat Reader.
The page itself stays exactly as Canva exported it; fields sit on top. Only the text people type into the fields uses a plain font chosen by the PDF form, not your Canva font.
The exported file is a standard PDF form, so buyers can fill it in Acrobat Reader, a browser or a phone app without an account. Check the licence terms of any Canva template or element you used before you sell the design.
